In September 2024, the South East Summer Camp participants reunited at the Wildwood Trust in Kent to kick off their Ambassador journey with Action for Conservation. The group explored the site learning about the historic species that once roamed Britain including European Bison, Beavers and Water Voles all of which take centre-stage in rewilding projects at Wildwood.

During the visit, Ambassadors took part in a biodiversity survey of the woodland which will be used by the Wildwood Trust to inform field guides for future visitors. Ambassadors also helped gather hibernation material for the resident Hazel Dormice.Â
Inspired by the wildlife, landscape and activities, AFC Ambassador, Mya, chose to write a poem about the experience.Â
Wildwood - Where Wild Creatures Roam
Wolves sing and their shadows play,
Bears bathe in the golden sun ray.
Owls gaze with their beautiful marble eyes,
Wallabies doze under the navy blue skies.
The luscious grass is where the bison roam,
Elk graze down low in their forest home.
Arctic foxes bound,
Their little paws tread without a sound.
The otter swims with ease,
Storks ruffle their feathers at the gentle breeze.
The badgers take action at night,
Boars settle amongst the undergrowth as the sun shines bright.
Dormouse toddle with their fur a burnt orange tint,
Wildcat paws leaving a perfect print.
Snakes slither under the moon’s glow,
Terrapins trundle around near the water’s flow.
Wildwood is the place where biodiversity gleams,
Somewhere I thought could only appear in dreams.
